Frequently Asked Questions

How do I read my oil tank gauge?

Most oil tanks have a float gauge on top that shows your fuel level. Look at the dial or marker - it typically shows Empty, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and Full. Enter the percentage in HomeHeat (e.g., 50% for half full).

How accurate are the predictions?

Predictions improve over time as HomeHeat learns your usage patterns. The more deliveries and readings you log, the better the estimates become. Weather data also affects accuracy - colder weather means faster consumption.

Why does my "days remaining" change?

The estimate updates based on weather forecasts. If a cold snap is coming, your predicted consumption increases, which reduces days remaining. This is by design - it helps you plan ahead.

What's the safety reserve?

HomeHeat calculates "days remaining" until you reach a minimum safe level (typically 10-15%), not empty. This gives you buffer time to order fuel and prevents running your tank dry, which can damage your heating system.

Do I need to create an account?

No. HomeHeat works entirely on your device. No account, no login, no password to remember.

Where is my data stored?

All your data is stored locally on your iPhone or iPad. It never leaves your device unless you choose to share a report with a supplier.

Can I transfer my data to a new phone?

Yes, if you restore from an iCloud backup or transfer directly from your old phone, your HomeHeat data will transfer automatically.

How do I delete my data?

Go to Settings > Manage My Data > Delete My Data. This permanently removes all your information from the app.

The app says I have X days but my tank looks different

Make sure your tank size is set correctly in Settings. Also, log a new reading to update the current level. Predictions are only as accurate as the data you enter.

Is HomeHeat free?

Yes, HomeHeat is completely free. No ads, no in-app purchases, no subscriptions.

Troubleshooting

App won't open / crashes

Try force-closing the app and reopening it. If that doesn't work, restart your device. If problems persist, try deleting and reinstalling the app (note: this will erase your data).

Weather data not loading

Make sure you have an internet connection. Check that you've entered a valid ZIP code in Settings. Weather data requires network access.

Predictions seem wrong

Double-check your tank size in Settings. Log at least 2-3 deliveries and readings over time for better accuracy. HomeHeat learns from your actual usage patterns to improve predictions.
